With the completion of a $400 million expansion project, DP World has strengthened its position as the primary gateway for international trade on the west coast of South America and increased container handling capacity at the South Terminal by 80%. The Port of Callao is located in Peru.
Callao is now one of the few ports in South America that can handle three ships (or two mega-vessels) at once thanks to the Bicentennial Pier expansion project, which will extend the pier from 650 meters to 1,050 meters.
The project adds 40 hectares of container yard space and increases handling capacity from 1.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually to 2.7 million TEUs.
A major component of DP World’s goals for Latin America, which were revealed last month, is the project. The development transforms the Port of Callao from an effective port to a leading logistics hub for the entire region, complementing the expansion of the nearby Jorge Chávez Airport and its proximity to Lima, the region’s capital.
Declaring that the completion of the Bicentennial Pier expansion represents a turning point for the Peruvian economy is Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Ecuador and Peru. Peru’s economic hub is the Port of Callao, which handles more than 90% of the nation’s containerized cargo, 60% of which passes through the South Terminal. Our capacity and operational efficiency are greatly increased by this expansion. When combined with other DP World ports, it reaffirms our commitment to boosting connectivity and economic vitality in Peru and the entire region.
