In a fresh show of solidarity, European allies have urged Kyiv to be included in any peace negotiations with Russia. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, and the European Commission released a unified statement prior to Friday’s summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

According to a White House official, Trump is open to holding a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but for the time being, it will just be a Trump-Putin summit, as the Russian leader first desired. “Dead decisions” are what Zelensky has called any deals that do not include Kyiv.

Trump earlier told reporters that he intended to “start off with Russia” and implied that he may begin by talking with Putin alone. However, the US president said that he thought “we have a shot at” setting up a trilateral meeting with Zelensky and Putin.

It’s unknown if Putin would consent to this because he has turned down several chances for direct negotiations and the two leaders haven’t met in person since Putin invaded Ukraine in full more than three years ago.
