The main narratives surrounding the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were heat and humidity. A 2023 study estimates that about 110 Olympians were ill from the heat because some outdoor venues had temperatures over 95 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels close to 70%.

Emily Sisson, a distance runner for Team USA and New Balance, ran in the intense heat of Tokyo and finished 10th in the 10,000-meter competition. And on August 11 in Paris, she’ll run again, this time in the marathon.

She remarked, “I almost hope it’s [hot] a little bit.” “I refuse to overlook it. I will get ready for it. I want to enter with the knowledge that I can manage those circumstances.

The Paris Olympics have seen pleasant weather overall, with highs in the 80s and 90s on occasion. However, it could have been much worse than Tokyo: France’s three hottest years have all occurred since 2020, with the capital recording a scorching 109 degrees Fahrenheit during a heat wave in 2022.
