Premier Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday night that the parties that make up her government will introduce a motion in the Italian Parliament demanding that Palestine be recognized, but with two requirements: that the hostages taken by Hamas during its attacks on October 7, 2023, be released, and that Hamas be barred from any future Palestinian government.

We must prioritize the correct issues, but I am not opposed to Palestine’s recognition,” Meloni stated. The decision represents a dramatic shift from Meloni’s position, which was in opposition to Italian public opinion and led to a wave of protests in Italian cities, and it reflects those made by Belgium and France, notwithstanding its limitations.

Together, they demanded that Israel be under stronger pressure to end the war and that Italy’s exports of military hardware and weapons to Israel be prohibited. 40.6% of Italians support the recognition of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty, according to a recent survey, while 21.9% favor the establishment of a temporary foreign administration. Following the Hamas strikes on October 7, 2023, Italians were wary of Israel’s actions, according to a different survey conducted by the Italian project YouTrend.
