The White House declares that mass layoffs of US federal employees will start in two days as Congress divide blame for the first government shuttering in nearly seven years. Following an inability of Congress’s Republicans and Democrats to reach a consensus on a new spending plan before the midnight deadline, the shutdown officially started on Wednesday. A vote to end the shutdown was unsuccessful barely hours after it started, and there is little indication that either side is prepared to make concessions.

Before agreeing to a budget agreement, Democrats want assurances on healthcare funding, while Republicans want to employ a short-term stopgap measure to keep the government operating until mid-November and maintaining existing funding levels.

In an effort to negotiate the preservation of healthcare benefits for Americans with lower incomes, Democrats have stated that they permitted the government to shut down. They claim that so far, attempts to negotiate these advantages with Republicans have failed.

For what reason are they abstaining from talks? “This is something I’ve never seen in my life,” Connecticut Democrat Senator Chris Murphy said of Republicans. “The issue is that the government will open once Republicans start talking to Democrats about it seriously.
