The Australian family known as the “Empire Family,” with millions of online followers, are relocating to the UK to avoid Australia’s pioneering social media ban for users under 16, which will start in December. The family includes mothers Beck and Bec Lea, their 17-year-old son Prezley, and 14-year-old daughter Charlotte, who all share their lives online.
They say their move will allow Charlotte to continue creating content, as they use the internet positively and support protecting youth from online harm. The ban requires platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X, and YouTube to prevent under-16s from having accounts, with fines up to A$50 million for non-compliance. While enforcement methods such as ID checks, parental approval, and facial recognition are still unclear, concerns about privacy and accuracy remain. The family benefits from dual citizenship and online schooling, enabling relocation while maintaining their strong digital presence.
This move reflects broader challenges faced by young content creators and families amidst evolving social media regulations worldwide. It also highlights the balancing act between safeguarding young users and preserving creative opportunities online.
