Elías Padilla had been gathering money for more than a year in order to travel as an undocumented immigrant from Honduras to the United States. It has been difficult for him to save money as an Uber driver in the congested streets of Tegucigalpa, the capital. He can earn as little as $12 (£9) in 12 hours on poor days. However, his intentions are now on hold.

At least one prospective immigrant from Central America has been discouraged from traveling north after seeing pictures of undocumented immigrants in major US cities being hauled away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, their wrists in zip-ties.

As we drive through the city, Elías says, “I want to improve my living conditions because we earn very little here.” For instance, in this industry, an American Uber driver earns as much in an hour as I would in a day.

Elías, like the majority of Honduran immigrants, claims that sending money home is the primary reason for coming to the United States. Trump acknowledges, “But I see what Trump is doing, and it’s made me think twice. Regarding the most recent presidential election, he states, “I’m going to wait to see what the change in government here brings. Hopefully, things will improve.
