Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a year had passed since his last address at the summit, when he warned Europe that it must learn to defend itself. According to him, little has changed since then.

Zelenskyy strongly criticised Europe’s lack of decisive action, saying the continent appears directionless and stuck in a cycle of repeating the same mistakes. He compared the situation to the film Groundhog Day, where events repeat endlessly. “No one would want to live like that,” he said, adding that Europe has been saying the same things for years without real progress.

He questioned Europe’s response to rising tensions around Greenland, especially the decision to deploy very small numbers of troops there. Zelenskyy asked what message such moves send to Russia, China, and even to Denmark, calling them symbolic rather than meaningful. He said sending 14 or 40 soldiers would not protect anything.

Zelenskyy noted that many European leaders now seem focused on Greenland but appear unsure how to respond. He warned against waiting for the United States to change its position, asking what Europe would do if that never happens.
