MPs on the Business and Trade Committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss opening an investigation into the role of UK trade envoys following Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest. Thames Valley Police arrested the former prince on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public service, and he was released 11 hours later under investigation.

Andrew served as the UK’s trade envoy from 2001 to 2011, giving him unique access to key government and corporate contacts around the world The cross-party committee will explore possibilities following allegations that Andrew exchanged classified government data while in office, but will not focus on him while he is under investigation by the police.

It comes as the government confirms that it is preparing legislation to remove Andrew from the royal line of succession (he is presently eighth in line for the throne) due to concerns about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, and he has not responded to the BBC’s requests for comment on specific claims that have surfaced since the US released millions of papers in January related to the late financier’s case.
