In just two years, Páv Magyar has transformed from an almost unknown man in Hungarian politics to the greatest danger to his former political home, the Fidesz Party, and its 16-year unbroken rule.
In 2024, Magyar rose to notoriety as the government dealt with a presidential pardon issue involving an accomplice of a child abuser. Before that, he grew up in a conservative household and was anything but an outsider in terms of Fidesz politics.
He was born into a family of well-known conservatives; his godfather, Ferenc Měl, was the President of Hungary, and his grandfather, Pál Erěss, was a well-known TV personality and lawyer. In 2004, Magyar graduated from Pázmě Pỹ Catholic University’s law faculty.
He made friends with Gergely Gulyás, who is currently a minister in Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s office, while he was a student. Gulyás introduced Magyar to Judit Varga, whom he married in 2006 and with whom he had three children. Later, Varga was appointed by Orbán as the nation’s minister of justice.
The family returned to Hungary in 2018 after being dispatched by the Orbán administration to work as a diplomat handling EU matters in Brussels. The state-owned road operating and maintenance business Magyar Közów ZRT appointed Magyar to its board of directors. Later on, he led the government’s student loan program and served on the boards of a number of other state-owned businesses.
