An Australian father of two who died on Saturday in Western Australia (WA) following a shark attack has received tributes. Around 10:00 local time, a 4-meter (13-foot) shark attacked 38-year-old Steven Mattaboni at Horseshoe Reef, northwest of the well-known Rottnest Island close to Perth.
About a kilometer offshore, he was spearfishing with companions when he was bitten on the lower leg in what the authorities called a “horrific” incident. Emergency personnel were unable to revive him despite his friends’ hasty return to shore.
He was a “avid fisherman” who “lived and breathed the ocean, according to his wife Shirene Mattaboni, who called him a “incredible father” to his two young children. The family’s “hearts are irrevocably broken,” she added in a statement. “Steven was a devoted father to our two beautiful daughters – one who turns three next month and our four-month-old baby.
“Fiercely loyal, endlessly generous, and the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back” is how she characterized her husband. Our daughters have lost an amazing father far too young, and the world has lost a genuinely unique gentleman. Mattaboni was also honored by the Kingsley Amateur Football Club, a “much loved friend to many” who played for the club in the northern suburbs of Perth.
