Apple says it will replace iPhone Duos that experience screen faults just days after the eagerly-awaited smartphone debuted on sale. Apple said it was aware of “an issue impacting the inner display on a small number” of the devices and told impacted users to contact the company for a replacement.
With the unveiling of the Duo, which drew crowds at Apple stores around the world last week, the company is trying to rejuvenate its gadget range and compete the foldable phones from rivals. Other Duo owners have uploaded pictures online of cracks developing along thescreen’s center fold, and others have reported hearing a crunching sound when they open the device.
An iPhone Duo user named Justin Lokos posted a snapshot of a phone with lines running across the right side of the display. He then posted a picture of a new handset next to the broken one, thanking an Apple store in New York for its support.
We don’t know the scope of the problem. Apple did not indicate how many devices were affected, and some photographs of the malfunctioning devices may have been generated using AI. The central hinge, a sophisticated piece of engineering that has caused similar faults in folding gadgets by some of Apple’s competitors, holds together the Duo’s 7.6-inch (19.3cm) inner display.
