After the incumbent Nicolas Maduro won the Venezuelan presidential election, Edmundo Gonzalez, the opposition candidate, and his supporters claimed that Fernandez should have won and that the election was unjust. The judiciary has affirmed the legitimacy of Maduro’s election.

The presidential contender, Maria Corino Machado, was already barred from running by the courts in the lead-up to the election. There were questions about the choice, and Gonzalez took her place in the opposition. There is strong suspicion that the Maduro government was virtually prohibiting opponents and governing an unsatisfactory system.

Gonzalez faced threats of imprisonment even as demonstrations against Maduro’s win erupted. At this time, he put his signature on a paper recognising Maduro’s triumph. Gonzalez’s daughter and the children who are still in the nation would be protected, the authorities promised. Gonzalez stated that he signed the papers stating that he was doing it in protest. Gonzalez is currently in Madrid and has been meeting with Spanish leaders to discuss the issue at home.
