By the end of 2026, Apple intends to shift the bulk of iPhones it sells in the US to Indian assembly, doubling its current production from the South Asian country and moving away from China as it struggles with US President Donald Trump’s trade battle with China.

This is a significant move that would help the tech giant offset some of the costs it confronts as a result of increased tariffs on China. Eighty per cent of the 60 million iPhones sold in the US are produced in China.

According to Reuters, which quoted an unidentified source, Apple, a firm valued at over $3 trillion, is reportedly in talks with Indian manufacturers it collaborates with, such as Foxconn and the Tata Group, to implement this plan.

To circumvent tariffs implemented under the first Trump administration, the tech giant has already increased production in India. Around 600 tonnes of goods were sent from India to the US in March, setting a record for both Tata and Foxconn, as the Silicon Valley-based tech company shipped $2 billion worth of iPhones, according to Reuters.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been promoting his nation as a worldwide centre for smartphone production. Companies like Apple benefited earlier this year when the nation eliminated import fees on a few key components used in the manufacture of mobile phones.
