Ukraine, which requested that Moscow immediately halt hostilities, was incensed when Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday authorised a truce with Ukraine for May 8–10, which coincided with Moscow’s commemorations of World War II. The declaration, which warned that this week would be “critical” for assessing if peace was conceivable, came as the United States stepped its attempts to mediate an end to the three-year conflict.

A US proposal for a complete and unconditional 30-day ceasefire was rejected by Putin last month, and US President Donald Trump has threatened to “pass” on peace talks if he does not see movement shortly.

According to Trump’s spokesperson, the White House chief was growing “increasingly frustrated” with the leaders of both Russia and Ukraine and wanted to see “a permanent ceasefire” on Monday.

During the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, from midnight on May 7 to midnight on May 10, the Russian side is announcing a ceasefire. During this time, all combat actions will be halted,” the Kremlin announced in a statement.

On Monday, President Vladimir Putin and Valentina Matvienko, the speaker of the Federation Council, met in St. Petersburg. The Kremlin stated that it was prepared to respond to any violations of the potential ceasefire and anticipated that Kyiv would issue a similar directive.
