According to President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is suing Google for allegedly disregarding repeated pleas to stop the Gulf of Mexico from being referred to as the Gulf of America on Google Maps for US customers.

She did not specify the location of the lawsuit’s filing. When the BBC asked Google for comment, the company did not reply. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted Thursday to rename the Gulf for government agencies. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on his first day in office in January.

He maintained that since the US “does most of the work there, and it’s ours,” the adjustment was warranted. Sheinbaum’s administration, however, argues that Trump’s directive only covers the US section of the continental shelf.

“All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with,” she stated, claiming that the US could not rename the entire gulf. Sheinbaum sent a letter to Google in January, requesting that the company reevaluate its choice to rename the Gulf of Mexico for users in the United States. She threatened to file a lawsuit the next month.
