Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Thursday that the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security are looking into a social media post by former FBI Director James Comey that some U.S. authorities took to be a demand for President Donald Trump’s murder.
Comey posted a picture of a “shell formation” on a beach that formed the digits “8647” in an Instagram post that has since been removed. Republican politicians, Trump supporters, and administration officials instantly denounced the tweet, claiming it openly disparaged the 47th president of the United States. The Merriam-Webster dictionary states that “eighty-six” can also indicate “to get rid of” colloquially.
“Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump,” Noem posted on X. “The Secret Service and DHS are looking into this threat and will react accordingly.
According to a Secret Service representative, the DHS-affiliated Secret Service “vigorously investigates anything that can be taken as a potential threat against our protectees. ”
“We take statements like this very seriously, and we are aware of the former FBI director’s social media remarks. We don’t discuss on protected intelligence issues beyond that,” the agency’s chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi, said in a statement.
