A senior official told reporters that the UAE is preparing to introduce new AI models modelled after China’s DeepSeek, describing the disruptive emergence of the system as “fantastic news.”

The creator of the Falcon big language model in the United Arab Emirates, Bannai, claimed that DeepSeek’s challenge to the US tech behemoths demonstrated that the competition for supremacy in AI was still quite open.

The United Arab Emirates is making a significant effort to diversify its economy away from fossil fuels, with a particular emphasis on transformative technologies. Bannai said he was encouraged by DeepSeek, an AI model that performed well and appeared to be inexpensive, which caused US tech stocks to plummet after it was released.

That’s fantastic news. “Because it demonstrates one thing: this game is just getting started,” Bannai stated during the World Governments Summit held in Dubai. Falcon, a large language model introduced in the UAE in 2023, performed well compared to industry leaders like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

According to Bannai, the UAE’s presidential advisor on new technologies, “What transpired with DeepSeek was further evidence that small teams, agile teams, and agile nations can move quickly and have an impact.

Therefore, I believe that we are learning from what they demonstrated. In addition to implementing various ideas in this area, we are also learning.
