Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, are beaming in public. Netanyahu has referred to Trump as Israel’s “greatest ever ally in the White House,” while Trump frequently claims that Israel has no finer buddy. And actions have matched these kind words.

Trump overturned the US’s long-standing stance that Israeli settlements in the Palestinian West Bank violate international law and relocated the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem during his first term as president.

Israel’s airstrike on the Hamas negotiating team in Qatar at the time appeared to be just another provocation that advanced the likelihood of peace. In addition to violating the sovereignty of an American ally, the September 9 attack ran the possibility of turning the dispute into a war spanning the entire area.

Instead, it proved to be a pivotal event that resulted in an agreement with President Donald Trump to free all of the remaining hostages. He and his predecessor, President Joe Biden, have been working toward this objective for almost two years. It is only the beginning of a more permanent peace; negotiations are still ongoing about the specifics of Hamas disarmament, Gaza government, and Israel’s complete disengagement.
