Democrats were quick to criticise US President Donald Trump of overreaching as he celebrated the “spectacular military success” of the attacks he approved against Iran. Late on Saturday, a number of detractors charged that Trump had violated the US Constitution by attacking Iran’s nuclear installations militarily without congressional consent.
Senator Christopher Van Hollen Junior stated in a statement, “Trump promised to end wars, but now he has pulled America into one. He is blatantly disregarding the requirement that only the Congress has the power to declare war, which is a violation of our Constitution.”
Lawmakers from both major parties have advocated for steps to force Trump to consult with Congress before initiating any strikes in the run-up to the US attacks. Congress has the power to declare war or approve the use of force for certain objectives under the US Constitution.
A strong objection to the United States supporting Israel’s war has also come from Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) camp. It has noted that Trump’s pledge to refrain from committing Washington to another Middle East conflict helped him win the election. They want Trump to concentrate on domestic matters, especially the state of the economy.
