According to preliminary results, Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines who is being held in The Hague for his drug war that murdered thousands of people, has been elected mayor of the stronghold where his family lives.
Long-time aide Christopher “Bong” Go and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, the former police commander carrying out his drug war, are two of his most devoted aides who have been re-elected to the nation’s senate.
However, the midterm election has also produced some surprising outcomes, despite being overshadowed by a dramatic rivalry between the Marcos and Duterte families. As the count continues, Vice-President Sara Duterte’s daughter’s future is still up in the air.
If a jury of the nation’s senators votes to impeach Sara Duterte, who is most likely to compete for president in 2028, she might be barred from politics.
It meant that her followers and her former ally, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., were engaged in a proxy war during the midterm elections, which saw 18,000 seats up for grabs, including senators, governors, and municipal politicians.
Candidates from both dynasties faced off, with Duterte’s team vying for the nine Senate votes she needs to stay in office.
