As Beijing battles an intensifying trade war with the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping made his much-awaited state visit to Malaysia on Tuesday.

Beijing is attempting to establish itself as a reliable alternative to US President Donald Trump’s punishing tariff system, and this week Xi set off on a Southeast Asia tour that has already brought him to Vietnam and will also include Cambodia.

According to video from Chinese official broadcaster CGTN, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the Chinese leader as he landed at the airport in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on Tuesday.

CCTV, another Chinese official channel, claimed that Xi expressed his excitement about “further deepening the traditional friendship” between China and Malaysia. According to CCTV, he stated that he will “have an in-depth exchange of views” during talks with King Sultan Ibrahim and Anwar.

According to the broadcaster, he stated that “this visit will surely achieve fruitful results with the joint efforts of both sides.” Before meeting with Anwar in Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia, on Wednesday morning, Xi is expected to attend a state dinner at the monarch’s palace.
