Reasons for Physicians Not Entering Paediatrics

Although I haven’t actively practiced paediatrics in a while, one of my favourite things to do is be a doctor on call for the children of friends and coworkers. I can handle the majority of their problems over the phone, but some require a paediatrician referral for in-person care. However, it has been difficult to make these kinds of connections in recent years. Many of the paediatricians I suggest are unable to accept new patients.

Some children cannot receive the care they require because there are not enough paediatricians in the world at the moment. Children in Nevada may have to wait weeks or even months to get an appointment. Children in New Jersey must wait three months in order to see a developmental paediatrician. Children in Philadelphia have to wait four months to see an allergist and three to six months to see a pulmonologist; many are not able to see a developmental paediatrician at all.

The outcomes of this year’s medical residency match, which matches residency programmes in American hospitals with medical students, were unexpected. Over 50,000 graduates of medical schools applied for residency programs.
