Tariffs Will Cause Americans to Spend Extra for Sneakers, Trousers and T-Shirts

According to American industry organisations, getting children back to school in new trainers, trousers, and T-shirts will likely cost US families much more this autumn if President Donald Trump’s customised tariffs on leading exporters go into force as planned.

According to the American Apparel & Footwear Association’s most recent figures, almost 97% of clothing and shoes purchased in the United States are imported, largely from Asia. Walmart, Gap Inc., Lululemon, and Nike are among the corporations that manufacture the majority of their apparel in Asian countries.

US fashion companies have been able to keep labor costs low by working with foreign factories, but neither they nor their foreign suppliers are likely to be able to sustain the new, high expenses. There aren’t any obvious sourcing options because countries like India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka were all hit with high tariffs. Steve Lamar, president and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association, stated that if these tariffs are let to continue, they would eventually reach the customer.

Given that 99% of shoe sales in the US are imports, Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, another trade association, offered projections of potential shoe price rises. According to the group, consumers would pay $220 for running shoes made in Vietnam, which are presently priced at $155, while work boots made in China, which currently retail for $77, would increase to $115.
