Austria’s domestic intelligence agency has discovered a cache of weapons in Vienna believed to be linked to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and intended for potential terrorist attacks in Europe, the government announced on Thursday.
Authorities said a 39-year-old British man, suspected of having close ties to the weapons, was arrested in London on Monday. According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, early findings suggest that Israeli or Jewish institutions across Europe may have been the intended targets.
The Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) uncovered the weapons as part of an international investigation into a global terrorist network connected to Hamas. The cache, hidden in a suitcase inside a rented storage unit in Vienna, contained five handguns and ten magazines.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner praised the operation, saying it demonstrated the DSN’s strong international cooperation and firm stance against extremism. “Our mission is clear — zero tolerance for terrorists,” he said.
The UK’s National Crime Agency confirmed that the suspect was detained in central London by specialist officers from the National Extradition Unit. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
