According to the Democratic governor of the US state of Illinois, President Donald Trump’s intention to send troops to Chicago is an abuse of power.
JB Pritzker said in a statement that the US president is “trying to manufacture a crisis” and that there is no emergency that warrants sending the National Guard to Illinois.
In what he is presenting as a crackdown on crime in American cities, Trump has already sent roughly 2,000 troops to Washington, DC, where opposition Democrats also control the local government.
Trump declared on Friday that he will enact the program in New York and Chicago, two additional significant cities that are controlled by Democrats.
Chicago In response to Trump’s remarks, Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a statement stating that he was unaware of the National Guard’s presence in Chicago.
He described the president’s strategy as “uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound” and stated that the municipal government has “grave concerns” about any force deployment.
Johnson went on to say that the “illegal deployment” might “inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement” and jeopardize the city’s crime-reduction efforts.
