The Leader of Bangladesh Refuses to Meet Tulip Siddiq

During his visit to London, Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s temporary leader, declined to meet with Labour MP Tulip Siddiq to examine the corruption accusations made against her. Yunus informed the BBC that the accusations were a “court matter” and that he had faith in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh, which is looking into Siddiq.

The ACC has charged Siddiq with unlawfully obtaining land from her aunt Sheikh Hasina’s government, which overthrew her as prime leader of Bangladesh last year. Former Treasury Minister Siddiq has attacked the Bangladeshi government for a “politically motivated smear campaign” and refuted the accusations.

In a letter, Siddiq asked Yunus, an economist who won the Nobel Prize and has been in charge of an interim administration in Bangladesh since Hasina was overthrown by a student-led protest movement, to meet with him.

Siddiq stated that a meeting “might also help clear up the misunderstanding perpetuated by the Anti-Corruption Commission in Dhaka” . During his four-day tour to the UK this week, Yunus was asked if he would meet Siddiq in an interview with the BBC. No I’m not because it’s a legal procedure,” Yunus responded. “I don’t want to interfere with a court case. Let the process go on.
