When Iran’s theocracy is put to the test for the first time in fifty years, a leader who has never been thoroughly tested assumes leadership. Following the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the opening salvos of this conflict, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has risen to the top through continuity and ties.

However, as the Islamic Republic faces an existential struggle, Iran’s third supreme leader since its revolution in 1979 assumes power. The Assembly of Experts, a group of 88 Shia Muslim clerics, chose him, and large throngs of revolutionary foot troops instantly flocked to the streets to chant Allahu Akbar God is greatest to celebrate.

Until their “last drop of blood,” the security troops promised to serve their new commander in chief. State TV displayed images of the first missiles fired in his honor, with the words “At your service, Seyyed Mojtaba” written on their side.

However, some of the numerous demonstrators who flocked to the streets in January to denounce his father as a “dictator” and demand his execution were heard yelling “Death to Mojtaba!” last night from the security of their apartments.
