The “Initiatives of His Highness the President of the United Arab Emirates” committee has approved a package of dams and water canals in various parts of the country in response to directives from President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and under the supervision of His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court.

By increasing the capacity of water installations, these initiatives seek to improve the UAE’s strategic water infrastructure and support the goals of the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.

The committee revealed intentions to create several embankment barriers, expand two existing water dams, and build nine new ones. In addition to increasing water reserves by collecting floodwaters and rainfall, these initiatives will fortify infrastructure to adapt to climate change and store up to 8 million cubic meters of water.

The projects will be finished in 19 months, and nine water canals, each about 9 kilometres long, will be built to lessen the effects of rainfall-induced water flow in certain residential areas. According to the committee, the projects will be implemented in 13 residential neighbourhoods, such as Sha’am and Al Fahleen in the Emirate of Ras Al, Masfout in the Emirate of Ajman, and Shis and Khor Fakkan in the Emirate of Sharjah.
