Iranian state media stated on Thursday that a 26-year-old man detained during protests in the city of Karaj will not get the death penalty, following Iran’s foreign minister’s declaration that Iran has “no plan” to hang people.
A previously publicized order for Erfan Soltani’s death has been postponed, according to rights organization Hengaw, which earlier this week stated that he was scheduled to be executed on Wednesday. The information cited Soltani’s relatives.
In response to a news report that an Iranian protester was no longer facing the death penalty, Trump said on social media on Thursday: This is excellent news. I hope it will go on. Trump said that very important sources on the other side” had informed him that the number of people killed during the operation was declining. The death penalty does not apply to charges of collusion against “internal security and propaganda activities against the regime,” according to Iranian state media.
Gold slipped from a record peak on Thursday, and oil prices fell from multi-month highs as a result of Trump’s remarks on Wednesday. Trump has made several threats to step in on behalf of demonstrators in Iran, where the country’s clerical regime has been severely suppressing protests since December 28.
