Donald Trump’s big tax-cut and spending measure was adopted by the US Senate after almost twenty-four hours of discussion that began yesterday morning and continued overnight. Key components of the agenda he ran on last year were included in the measure, which passed by the slimmest of margins on Tuesday.
Trump visited a Florida immigration detention centre to celebrate its passing. Saying, “It’s a great bill,” “There is something for everyone.” In actuality, however, MPs probably had to make compromises in order to get “something” they desired and, eventually, to pass the measure through the House on Tuesday.
The House, which passed its version of the measure weeks ago, is now playing political ping-pong with the bill. The law may be forwarded to the president for his signature if the slim Republican majority in that chamber grants final approval, which could happen as early as Wednesday.
It includes a significant increase in money for Trump’s immigration policies of $70 billion. It makes the tax cuts Republicans enacted during Trump’s first term permanent and increases defence expenditure. It reduces funding for Medicaid, the health insurance program for Americans with low incomes, and environmental programs from the Biden administration to offset this loss.
