Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was shot and killed by federal investigators in Minneapolis, according to his family. He is thought to have joined protests following the shooting death of 37-year-old Renee Good in her car earlier this month by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. He has been described as an enthusiastic outdoorsman who liked mountain biking.
There are conflicting reports of the events that preceded his demise. Pretti, who the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims possessed a weapon, refused attempts to disarm him, so an agent fired in self-defense. Pretti’s family and a few officials and eyewitnesses have contested that account.
There is no proof in the videos that he threatened agents with any kind of weapon. According to a statement from Pretti’s family, he was an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital. He expressed his displeasure with US President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement in the city to the Associated Press news agency (AP).
Pretti’s mother added that her son was deeply affected by the Trump administration’s relaxation of environmental rules. Susan Pretti told AP, “He hated that, you know, people were just trashing the land.” He was an outdoorsman,” she continued. Everywhere he went, he brought his dog. He detested what others were doing to this country, even if he loved it.
