The investigation has included fashion designer and lifestyle influencer Archana Makwana, of Vadodara, who was accused of offending Sikh religious sentiments on 21 June by doing yoga at the Golden Temple, Darpan Ahluwalia, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-1), announced on Wednesday.

Days after receiving a summons from the police, Makwana joined the investigation. Ahluwalia stated, “The accused has sent her statements online to join the investigation,” declining to say if Makwana would be taken into custody.

On June 21, International Yoga Day, Makwana’s photos of herself doing “sirsasana” at the Golden Temple went viral on social media, provoking hate, threats of death, and other negative comments. Later, she regretted what she had done and declared that she had never meant to offend someone’s religious beliefs.

Following a complaint from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the Punjab Police filed a case against Makwana at the E-division police station under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with the deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class.
