Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that some air defence systems supplied by Western allies ran out of missiles at a crucial moment, just as Russia launched another large wave of attacks targeting civilian areas and key infrastructure.
Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy explained that several systems were temporarily left without ammunition. He noted that the situation has since been resolved. “Until this morning, we had several systems without missiles. Today I can say this openly, because today I have those missiles,” he told reporters.
Zelenskyy has consistently urged Ukraine’s allies to strengthen the country’s air defence capabilities, stressing their importance in protecting vital infrastructure as Russia’s full-scale invasion approaches its fourth year.
In recent months, Russian forces have stepped up strikes on Ukraine’s energy network, aiming to disrupt electricity and heating supplies during the winter. Kyiv has been one of the main targets. Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that the capital currently has only about half of the electricity it needs, according to local media. He has previously advised residents to consider leaving the city temporarily as a safety measure.
