According to relief organisations in Sudan, a military airstrike on a rural market in the western part of the country on Tuesday killed at least 54 people. Adam Rejal, a spokesman for the General Coordination, a local organisation aiding displaced persons in Darfur, said the strike on Monday in the village of Tora resulted in a massive fire.

Civilians had not been targeted, according to Sudanese military spokesman Brig. Gen. Nabil Abdullah also called the accusations “incorrect” and “are raised whenever our forces exercise their constitutional and legal right to deal with hostile targets.

The weekly market in Tora, which lies 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, was largely destroyed by the strike.  A local organisation called Support Darfur Victims, which aids those affected by the Darfur crisis, posted gruesome video footage that seemed to show burned buildings and charred remains on the ground.

Rejal supplied a list of the casualties, showing that women made up more over half of the deaths. According to the list, seven people were reported missing and at least 23 injured. A crime against humanity and a clear violation of all international and humanitarian laws and conventions,” Rejal declared the strike to be.
