The UAE announced a new $60 million (Dhs220 million) initiative from the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for the development of schools to support the educational needs of visually impaired students throughout Ethiopia, as directed by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In partnership with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, a portfolio organisation of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, will spearhead this endeavour. It expands on the achievements of the May 2024 opening of the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak School for the Blind in Addis Ababa.

In the presence of Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State and member of the Board of Trustee of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, Zinash Tayachew, First Lady of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and other dignitaries, Mohamed Haji Al Khoori, Director-General of the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, signed the agreement.

Ethiopia is home to an estimated 1.2 million people with visual impairments, 332,000 of whom are blind. By reaching rural areas where access to healthcare and education is still limited, our program directly tackles a critical humanitarian need. Trachoma is a preventable eye illness that disproportionately affects underprivileged people, and Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of this disease in the world.
