A “motion of censure,” or vote of no-confidence, against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her College of Commissioners is scheduled for discussion and a vote in the European Parliament next week.

According to Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea of the ultra-conservative party AUR, he has gathered 73 signatures for his resolution, which is more than the minimal number of MEPs (72) needed to start the procedure as required by law.

Piperea’s office reports that the proposal has received support from 32 members of his political party, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). Non-attached MEPs, the far-right organisations Patriots for Europe (6) and Europe of Sovereign Nations (26) provided the remaining signatures. Following the announcement, a plenary debate on the resignation request must be planned at least 24 hours in advance, and a vote on the issue must occur at least 48 hours later.

If President Metsola introduces the motion by the end of this week, the debate might take place on Tuesday, July 8, and the vote would take place on Thursday, July 10, according to parliamentary sources who spoke to Euronews.

Any MEP who signs the motion, however, has the right to revoke their support at any moment. Should the tenth barrier no longer be reached, the procedure is terminated.
