Trump’s tariff threats have been retaliated against by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who claims that his American counterpart was elected as the US president and “not to be the emperor of the world. Trump said in a statement published on his social media network, Truth Social, this week that he will impose punishing tariffs of 50% on Brazil beginning August 1.

In his letter, Trump connected the exorbitant tariff threat to what he called a “witch hunt” investigation of Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing former president of Brazil. Bolsonaro, a staunch Trump admirer, is on trial in Brazil for allegedly trying to topple Lula after he won the US presidency in 2022. If proven guilty of orchestrating the coup, he could spend more than 40 years in prison.

In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday, da Silva, better known by his stage as Lula, said that Trump’s threats had deviated from “protocol” and maintained that trade talks could not address his predecessor’s destiny.

In Brazil, the judicial arm of government operates independently. “There is no influence on the president of the Republic,” he stated, adding that Bolsonaro “is not being judged personally.” He is being evaluated based on his attempts to orchestrate a coup d’etat.
