Five large wildfires are raging in Greece, and authorities are evacuating people from a severely affected area only 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) north of the country’s capital, Athens. Greece requested help from the European Union to combat the expanding fire, and the stench of burning wood could be heard as far as central Athens.

The strong heatwave coincides with the current situation. On Sunday, highs of 44°C (111.2°F) are predicted, and the intense heat is likely to last for the most of the weekend. Giannis Kefalogiannis, Greece’s Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, stated, “We have injured firefighters, human lives were put at risk, properties have been burned, and forest areas have been destroyed.

Strong winds and intense heat have stoked the fire. Greece has officially asked for six more firefighting planes from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. A fire that began in Afidnes on Saturday quickly spread to Drosopigi, Kryoneri, and Agios Stefanos in Attica, the area that contains Athens, forcing inhabitants to evacuate.

Dispersed hotspots are still burning even though the fire department claims the main front has been contained. With the assistance of water-bombing planes and helicopters, more than 200 firemen are still on the scene.
