Mindfulness, or focusing on the present moment, can help you sleep better, reduce stress, and improve overall health. A new study led by the University of South Florida provides insight into why.
Over the course of two weeks, researchers examined 144 nurses to see how well they could stay focused on the present moment and how frequently they became preoccupied with negative thoughts. The nurses completed three daily surveys and reported on their sleep quality the next morning.
The findings shed light on the relationship between mindfulness and emotion regulation or how people deal with stressful situations like work setbacks.
Claire Smith, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor of psychology in the USF College of Arts and Sciences, also provides a clearer picture of how employees and employers can reduce work-related stress.
“Mindfulness is often seen as a magical cure-all for employee stress,” Smith told me. “The way it’s frequently discussed makes it appear as if staying grounded and accepting of the present moment guarantees you’ll never be stressed. To me, adding more nuance is critical.
