While European Union defense ministers promised to train Kyiv’s soldiers on Ukrainian territory in the case of a truce, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy asked partners on Friday to quickly advance discussions on security assurances for Ukraine to the level of leaders. In an attempt to halt Russia’s conflict, which is currently in its fourth year, Kyiv is pursuing diplomatic measures to get important promises from its allies to repel any further incursion.

Zelenskiy also brought up Trump’s self-imposed deadline; if President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a one-on-one meeting with the Ukrainian leader, he will have to decide on further sanctions against Russia. Monday will mark the second week.

It was anticipated that Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who was also in New York, would meet with American business leaders to talk about investments in Ukraine, Zelenskiy said. In particular, as part of a crucial minerals agreement reached earlier this year, Kyiv officials saw U.S. money as essential to ensuring a long-lasting peace agreement.

Kaja Kallas, the senior diplomat for the EU, stated that European Union defense ministers in Copenhagen on Friday showed “broad support” for extending the bloc’s military training mission to operate inside Ukraine.
