For the family members in Israel who have been waiting a long time for this kind of news, Hamas’s agreement to free the remaining hostages, subject to negotiations and the fulfillment of specific requirements, will be a true source of optimism.
The organization committed to “release all Israeli prisoners, both living and dead, according to the exchange formula contained in President Donald Trump’s proposal, provided the field conditions for the exchange are met” in a statement in response to the US peace bid.
Trump presented that plan at the White House earlier this week, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the 72-hour release of all Israeli captives still alive who are being held by Hamas.
To determine the genuine objective, the Israeli authorities will now be closely examining the statement’s phrasing. It must determine if it understands this as an effort to buy time and reopen protracted negotiations or as a sincere good faith acceptance of some of the deal’s main aspects.
Some members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet are probably quite skeptical, especially because it happened only hours after President Donald Trump issued his final warning to Hamas to comply by Sunday night or face “all hell.” This is especially important today that the US president has urged Israel to halt the bombardment of Gaza right away.
