California Governor Gavin Newsom charged President Donald Trump with a “brazen abuse of power” in a televised speech on Tuesday evening. He said that the immigrant areas in his state were being terrorised by the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions.
California could be the first, but it won’t stop here,” he said. “Democracy is under assault before our eyes.” Newsom’s address was the most recent exchange between the US president and the Democrat in charge of the most populous state in the union.
The 57-year-old governor has a significant task due to the conflict between the two leaders. Regardless of whether it serves his political interests, he continues, Newsom has a duty to protect California as the state’s governor. He called it a call to duty.
Trump has criticised Newsom for being “grossly incompetent” and for not reacting appropriately when some of the rallies in Los Angeles descended into violence. On Tuesday, he dropped his previous insulting moniker of “Newscum” for the governor and declared that he thought it would be a “great thing” to arrest him.
