The US military quickly refuted Iran’s assertion that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy had intercepted a US undersea vehicle while conducting reconnaissance in the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC Navy said in a statement that a “coordinated intelligence and electronic warfare operation” led to the vessel’s seizure. They add that Iranian military experts have been given the vehicle “to retrieve its data” and that it is a REMUS 600.
The US Navy and a number of NATO members deploy REMUS 600 autonomous underwater vehicles, according to Iranian media. Compared to bigger ocean-going submersibles, they are comparatively lightweight, modular devices.
The vehicles, which can operate at depths of up to 600 meters, are primarily intended for surveillance, seabed mapping, mine countermeasures, and underwater inspections. They are outfitted with a variety of sensors, cameras, and sophisticated sonar systems.Soon after, US CENTCOM, which oversees US military activities in the Middle East, refuted the Iranian accusations.
