The European People’s Party (EPP) Group has penalized all seven MEPs from Hungary’s opposition Tisza party for failing to back European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a vote of censure against her on Thursday. The main opposition party in Hungary, Tisza, is led by Páv Magyar and will run against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s administration in the nation’s legislative elections on April 12.

The party’s drive to topple Orbán’s nationalist administration is supported by the EPP Group, of which it is a member. In an effort to improve voting discipline, the group passed new regulations earlier this week. As a result, members who disagree with the party’s stance on important votes are now automatically penalized. Tisza MEPs should note of the decision,” he stated. “At the identical time, we are thankful for the assurance from Brussels that Tisza politicians have no owners.

The European Parliament overwhelmingly supported the far-right Patriots for Europe group’s vote of censure against the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement. Tisza did not provide an explanation for their refusal to support von der Leyen. In addition to Tisza, four other EPP MEPs abstained from voting on the resolution, and one, Jessika van Leeuwen of the Dutch Farmer-Citizen Movement, voted against von der Leyen.
