According to the US military, senior Pentagon officials have come to Ukraine to “discuss efforts to end the war” with Russia. When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky returns from a trip to Turkey on Thursday, the team, commanded by US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, is anticipated to meet with him in Kyiv.
On Wednesday, rumors started to circulate that a new peace deal involving significant concessions from Ukraine had been drafted by the US and Russia. Moscow and Washington have not formally acknowledged the plan.
Ternopil, in western Ukraine, was the target of a Russian missile and drone attack earlier in the day that killed at least 26 people, according to Ukrainian officials. In 2022, Ukraine was fully invaded by Russia.
According to a statement from Army spokesperson Col. David Butler, Secretary Driscoll and his team arrived in Kyiv this morning on a fact-finding mission on behalf of the administration to meet Ukrainian leaders and discuss ways to halt the crisis.
General Randy George, the chief of staff of the US Army, General Chris Donahue, the senior US Army commander in Europe, and Srg Maj of the Army Michael Weimer join Driscoll. Since President Donald Trump took office in January, Driscoll and Gen. George are the most senior U.S. military officials to meet in the Ukrainian capital.
