Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court decided on Tuesday that former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro must start serving his 27-year jail term for organizing an attempted coup. Following his conviction for organizing a coup to remove President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2022, the former president’s defense team decided not to seek a final appeal. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison after Moraes asked that the verdict be declared final, ending any possibility of additional appeals.

Bolsonaro was arrested on Saturday for interfering with his court-mandated ankle monitor, and he has been detained in Brazil’s Federal Police headquarters ever since. Bolsonaro will carry out his term inside the headquarters, according to Moraes on Tuesday.

Bolsonaro’s attorneys called the former president’s arrest “unjustifiable” on Saturday and asserted that his health is in jeopardy while incarcerated. Subsequently, the Supreme Court published a video in which it claims Bolsonaro acknowledges using a soldering iron to tamper with his ankle monitor. He allegedly claimed that he did so because he was experiencing hallucinations from new meds rather than in an effort to get free from house imprisonment.
