Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández is presently serving a 45-year federal prison sentence for a massive US drug trafficking conviction. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he plans to grant Hernández a “complete pardon.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, I will be granting a Full and Complete Pardon to Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez who has been treated very harshly and unfairly, according to many people that I greatly respect.
Prosecutors charged Hernández with working with criminal traffickers to transport over 400 tons of cocaine from Honduras to the United States during his term. Hernández received millions of dollars in bribes in return, according to the prosecution, which he used to further his political career in Honduras.
The Justice Department claimed that Hernández “protected and enriched the drug traffickers in his inner circle” during his tenure. He used his executive authority to promote the extradition of those drug traffickers who threatened his grip on power” to the United States, according to the prosecution, while “promising drug traffickers who paid him and followed his instructions that they would remain in Honduras.
