Australia’s consumer watchdog has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the internet giant used unfair contract conditions to insert advertisements in Prime Video. By entering into unfair contracts with more than a million yearly subscribers between November 2023 and August 2025, Amazon violated consumer protection laws, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).Customers were forced to pay more to keep the service they had originally signed up for if they wanted to avoid advertisements, according to ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.

The BBC was informed by an Amazon representative that the business is “reviewing the case filed by the ACCC in detail.”We have assisted the ACCC during its inquiry and are still committed to giving our Australian clients the greatest possible experience,” she continued.

For almost ten years, Amazon’s well-liked Prime membership, which is marketed as an improvement over its main delivery service, included Prime Video, a commercial-free streaming service. In Australia, Prime was introduced in 2018. Early in 2024, it began implementing advertising in the service worldwide.
