A wealthy investor interested in purchasing TikTok’s US business has told the BBC that he has been left in the dark as the app’s next deadline for sale approaches. The US has repeatedly delayed the deadline for Bytedance, the platform’s Chinese owner, to sell or block American users. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump appears poised to extend the deadline for the fifth time. We’re just standing by and awaiting to see what happens,” said investor Frank McCourt to BBC News.

But if the time comes, we’re ready to go… we’ve raised the funds to buy it; we’ll see.” The popular short-form video app was set to be banned or marketed in the United States in January, according to a 2024 congressional law.

At the time, lawmakers voiced concern that ByteDance’s ties to the Chinese government jeopardized national security, and that Beijing would force the company to pass over data on US users. TikTok and its creators have often stated that this is a false worry. President Joe Biden signed the law while he was still in office, and it was upheld by the Supreme Court early in 2025.
